This terracotta cooking pot makes slow-cooked recipes a pleasure to prepare: food does not stick, flavours are beautifully preserved, and heat is distributed gently and evenly. It can be used on a gas hob, in the oven or, for more traditional cooking, directly over hot embers.

Each pot is entirely handmade in the Alentejo. It is shaped on a potter’s wheel, then hand-painted using skills passed down through generations.

Local Alentejo clay, natural pigments and entirely handmade production in a workshop that is more than a century old give each piece its own distinctive character. Slight variations in shape, colour or decoration may occur: they reveal the artisan’s hand and make every pot truly unique.

Why I love it

  • The gentle, even cooking that beautifully preserves flavours.
  • A versatile cooking pot suitable for a gas hob, the oven and hot embers.
  • Local Alentejo clay and entirely artisanal production in a century-old workshop.

How to care for terracotta cookware

  1. Dry the pot thoroughly before and after use.
  2. Avoid excessively high temperatures and never expose the pot directly to an open flame.
  3. Always place the pot in a cold oven, then allow it to heat up gradually.
  4. Never place a hot pot on a cold surface such as marble, a wet surface or a sink.
  5. Allow it to cool naturally before washing.
  6. Hand washing is recommended, avoiding abrasive cleaners or metal scouring pads.

When you choose a piece from this remarkable collection, you are acquiring an object made from red clay and shaped by the hands of José Alves, one of the last potters to master the traditional potter’s wheel.

This family pottery workshop, whose roots go back to his great-great-grandfather, still stands in the same place today. "I thought the future of our business was under threat, but one of my daughters came to help me and brought a new sense of innovation through her artistic painting on the pieces," he explains with emotion.

Red clay pottery, known locally as "Olaria de barro vermelho", is particularly well suited to functional cookware and makes it possible to prepare exceptional stews: "In a terracotta pot, meat becomes exceptionally tender," says José Alves, reflecting both his expertise and his deep attachment to his craft.

Ideal Gift!

Purchased this for my daughter-in-law who is getting married in Portugal. She likes simple things so this pattern was perfect.

Wrong one sent; horrible customer service

They sent the wrong pot. It was to be a wedding gift. My receipt had the correct picture on it and the website had it listed as in stock. Customer service made excuses and is not responding to my request for a refund.

Hello Karen, I'm sorry to hear your feedback. As stated on the product page, this item is 100% handmade, and each piece is slightly different by nature. If you’re looking for standardized tableware, I would recommend choosing industrially made products, which may better suit your expectations. As I mentioned, you're welcome to return your order within 14 days, and we’ll issue a full refund.
